1. He emigrated through Hamburg on 04/16/1879 from Alt Wuhrow, Kreis Dramburg, Pommern, Germany It appears that August and his family had worked for a dream. He traveled with his wife Henriette and with all their children, Carl, Henriette, Gustac, Emilie, Hulda, and Wilhelm and also Bertha and her husband Carl Martin. Because of the expense, it was not very common for so many family members to travel together. More often, families would save enough to send a few, alone or in pairs, each following the others over a period of years, until all of the family was together again.

The ship they travelled on was named the Gellert and was captained by Herr Kapitän Kühlewein. They departed from Hamburg and traveled "zwichendeck" (second class) about six weeks to arrive in New York. [1]
