Born in Fort Wayne

Mr. Wefel was not yet thirty-eight years of age. He was a native of Fort Wayne, born October 23, 1865, and was educated in Lutheran schools of this city. After his confirmation he entered a drug store on Main street to learn the profession of a pharmacist, and later was employed as a prescriptionist at both the Wagner and the Dreier drug stores. Mr. Wefel next accpted a position as traveling salesman for Meyer Bros. & Co., in which he remained for nearly ten years. Shortly after his marriage, about thirteen years ago, Mr. Wefel embarked in the drug business upon his own account, purchasing Burger drug store, at Hanna and Lasselle streets. Here he remained in business until his death. The business was but a very small one when Mr. Wefel became its owner, and he has gradually enlarged it until it is now one of the well known drug stores of the city. A few years ago he erected the building which the store now occupies.

Mr. Wefel was united in marriage to miss ella weller, of this city, who, with three bright, lovable children, survives. The are Esther, Mabel and Howard. Mr. Wefel's parents are dead, but there are three brothers and three sisters living. They are William Wefel, of this city; Henry Wefel, living in Nebraska, and Rev. John Wefel, a Lutheran minister at Cleveland. The sisters are Mrs. William Fritze, of Kansas, and Mrs. Christ. Cook and Mrs. A. C. Penningroth, of this city.

PROMINENT IN POLITICS

While Mr. Wefel's business career had made him widely known in Fort Wayne, it was in political circles that he, as a leader os the socialist party, became prominent. Hewas a man of much intelligence, vigorous an forceful, and had pronounced ideas upon governmental affairs as they affect laboring man. He believed the hope of the laboring man lay in the socialist policies and was a strong adherent of that political faith. He had frequently been the nominee of his party for city and county offices and during the last campaign was the socialist nominee for congress in this district. He made addresses at numerous points during the campaign and was already at work for future political struggles, having delivered a political address at Auburn but two weeks ago.

He was district chairman of the socialist party, and was also a candidate for national committeeman of the party from Indiana. But for his sudden death today, his election to the latter position would undoubtedly have occurred within the next few days. His efforts in behalf of his party and the laboring portion of the population were indefatigable; he was an undaunted champion of the interests of the poor man as he saw them, and his death removes a young business man of much ability and forceful power.Personally Mr. Wefel was a most companionable man; he was wholly honorable, genial and kindly, and his death will be sincerely mourned by a very wide circle of very warm friends. The news of the lamentable affair produced a profound shock throughout the city, and particularly in the section where he had resided for so many years.

The funeral arrangments have not been concluded and annoucement will be made later.
