William H. Welge Dies; Gilster-Mary Lee chairman

CHESTER -- William H. Welge of Chester, chairman of the board of Gilster-Mary Lee Corp., died Thursday, April 4, 1985, in Memorial Hospital in Chester. He was 82.

Mr. Welge was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Chester. He was the founder of Beta Sigma Psi Fraternity at the University of Illinois.

He served on the board of directors of the Buena Vista National Bank in Chester. He also was past president of the Chester School Board, Illinois Feed Dealers Association and Chester Chamber of Commerce. He was a past director of Millers Mutual Insurance Co. in Alton. He also was a member of the original Chester Bridge Commission and the Chester Rotay Club.

He was born Aug. 14, 1902, in Chester, to William G and Clara Gilster Welge. He married Rudelle Fritze Aug. 3 1933 in Chester.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Donald E., president and general manager of Gilster-Mary Lee Corp., and Michael W., executive vice president and treasurer of Gilster-Marylee Corp.; one sister, Agnes Gunther of Anaheim, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.

One son, 1st Lt. Bruce R. Welge, died in Vietnam in 1969.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday at the Welge Funeral Home in Chester.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Veteran's Parish Hall, St. John's Radio Broadcast Fund or Beta Sigma Psi Scholarship Fund.

Rudelle Welge

CHESTER -- Rudelle Welge, 91, died at 12:10 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at home.

Services will e at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Welge-Pechaccek Funeral Home in Chester, with the Rev. Mark Willig officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today and from 7:30 to 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral heome.

Memorials may be made to the St. John Lutheran Church redecorating fund.

Mrs. Welge had been a music teacher for several years.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid for many years and served as treasurer for St. John's Ladies Aid for more than 35 years. She was also instrumental in forming the church Sunday school during the 1940s. She was a charter member and vice president of the Chester Community Choral Club. She had also served as president of the Chester High School Band Patrons, chairman and co-chairman of the Red Cross drive for several years and was involved in the organization of the first Mothers' March of Dimes in Chester. She was a charter member and past president of the Chester Woman's Club. Rudelle was also a member of Memorial Hospital's first board of directors, where she served as treasurer and was very involved in collecting funds for constructing the new hospital.

Mrs. Welge was very active and devoted much of her time in other community activities and several years ago received Chester's Outstanding Citizen of the Year award.

She was born Sept. 19, 1906 in Highland and was adopted by Dr. and Mrs. Albert E. Fritze.

She married William H. Welge on Aug. 3, 1933 in Chester. He died April 4, 1985.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Mary Alice Welge and Mike and Betty Welge, allof Chester; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Her parents, one son, Bruce, two sisters and teo brothers also pre ceded her in death.
