He was the son of a Lutheran missionary and spent his childhood in India. He graduated from high school at St. John's Academy in Winfield, Kan., and attended Kansas State College of Emporia. He served 21 years in the Air Force, and was stationed in Labrador and Thailand before his retirement in 1975,

Survivors include his brother, Henry Fritze.
