17. | Her obituary was published in the Council Grove Republican on 07/12/1939 in Council Grove, Morris, Kansas. [17] Mollie E (Boenitz) Barr Mrs. Mollie Barr, oldest resident of Diamond Creek and one of the earliest settlers of Morris County, died Tuesday at the home of her son, Carl, following a long illness. She had recently celebrated her ninetieth birthday. Mollie E (Boenitz) Barr was born July 13, 1849 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Carl Herman and Henrietta Charlotte (Hegwer) Boenitz. In the fall of 1859, she came to Kansas with her parents and they settled on a farm near Hymer, now owned by Andrew Drummond. They rode the rail to St. Joseph, where her father bought a covered wagon, a yoke of oxen and household supplies. It took several days to make the trek to Neosho Crossing, where the Main Street bridge now stands. When they reached this trading post, only a store and a few scattered cabins were there. They went on west to the Whitney place, which was owned by Trogett Hegwer, Mollie's uncle. This was two years before Kansas was admitted as a State. Mrs. Barr lived in Chase County where she married James Francis Barr in 1879. Shortly after the marriage, the couple moved to Diamond Springs in Morris County. This was her home for the next 61 years. Despite her advanced age, she served as an officer in the Old Settler' Club and regularly attended the Diamond Springs Pioneer Club. Funeral services were held at 2:30pm, Thursday, in the Barr home at Diamond Springs and burial was in the Diamond Springs Cemetery. Mrs. Barr has one son, Carl, a rancher and stock feeder. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1911, one daughter in infancy, one daughter Erma in 1916 and Stella F. Loomis in 1934.
