Janette Schroeder, 76, area native
Janette Schroeder, 76, rural of Stewartville, dies of natural causes Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, where she had been admitted on Monday.
Janette Mae Vrieze was born Sept. 6, 1933, in Racine, to Earle and Lucille (Baures) Vrieze. She moved with her family at the age of 6 to a farm in rural Fillmore, where she attended country school and Wykoff High School, graduating in 1951. She married Lester W. Schroeder at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville on Sept. 7, 1952. Following their marriage, the couple built a new house across the road from the Schroeder family farm in rural Stewartville. They raised their family there and continued to make it their home for 57 years.
She was a farm wife and homemaker and also was employed as a bookkeeper at Greenway Cooperative in Rochester for many years. She then attended Rochester Vocational School and was employed for 19 years at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester as a unit secretary in a pediatrics unit until her retirement in 1997. Her husband farmed his entire life and also had worked part-time as a carpenter, including doing the construction of their own home. She was a longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville. She taught ceramics and sold Avon for a number of years and enjoyed quilting, reading, camping, fishing with her family, and bird watching, particularly the loons up north and the hummingbirds on the farm. She especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and babysitting with her great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Christine (Jim) Leis of Sparta, Wis., and Barbara (Dean) Polkowske of Stewartville; on son, Bruce (Vicki) of rural Racine; one daughter-in-law, Linda Schroeder of rural Wykoff; a granddaughter, Jill Williams of Stewartville, whom they raised from the age of 6 months; eight other grandchildren; Joseph (Jody) Schroeder, Sarah Schroeder,Chad Elton, Diana Elton, Derek Thielen, Scott (Laura) Thielen, Ryan Schroeder, and Kyle Schroeder; 11 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Carole (Lou) Wilder of Hastings, Minn., Mary (John) Metcalf of Tice, Fla., Donna Oeltjen of Lake City, Minn.; four brothers, Leslie (Ruth) Vrieze of California, William Vrieze of New Mexico, Loren (Shirley) Vrieze of Rochester and Nevin (Gloria) Vrieze of Fountain; one sister-in-law, Darliene Ask of Fountain.
She was preceded in death by one son Gary, and one brother, Burdette Vrieze.
The funeral was Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stewartville with Rev. Lyle Fritsch officiating and burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville.
Griffin-Gray Funeral Home in Stewartville was in charge of arrangements.
