[12] Helen (Porter) English, 94, of Anamosa, died Sunday, May 18, 2003, at the Anamosa Care Center surrounded by her family, following a long battle with cancer. Services: 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Anamosa. The Rev. Carl Manternach will officiate. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Anamosa. Burial: Holy Cross Cemetery, Anamosa. A Scripture service will be held at 7 tonight at the funeral home. Helen (Porter) English was born Feb. 3, 1909, in Martelle, the daughter of Harry and Anna Ellison Porter. Helen graduated from Anamosa High School with the Class of 1927. Helen was very proud of being one of three in the last class of nursing from Mercy Hospital, Anamosa, 1930. She was united in marriage to William M. English Sr. on Dec. 2, 1933, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Anamosa. The couple farmed near Anamosa. Helen practiced nursing in Anamosa for 41 years. Survivors include a son, William M. English Jr. (Mayme) of Anamosa; two daughters, M. Kathryn "Kay" English of Anamosa and Janice Mahoney (Kevin) of Lexington, Mass.; a granddaughter, Mary English Diaz; five grandsons, Matt (Luida), Mike (Ronna), Mark (Jordanna), Jay Mahoney and Rob Mahoney; 12 great-grandchildren, Chris, Josh, Samantha, Matthew, Curtis, Ashton, Thomas, Alicia, Jordan English, Kasey Breckon, and Martin and Natlie Diaz; and two brothers, James Porter of Coralville and Jack (Maxine) Porter of Fairfield.
